Communication & Collective Movement
From staying together while on the move to banding together against common enemies, social living requires coordination. But how do groups achieve such coordination? What communication strategies do they use? And how might the mechanisms of coordination vary based on social and ecological factors?
In the Communication & Collective Movement Research Group (CoCoMo), we study how social groups communicate and coordinate with one another across a range of different species and contexts. Our research combines high-resolution tracking of wild animal groups, experiments, and computational methods to tackle this question.
Our approach is highly interdisciplinary and collaborative. We work closely with several research groups and long-term research studies around the world.
We are jointly affiliated with the Ecology of Animal Societies Department at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior and the Biology Department at the University of Konstanz.
